The USEA Eventing Coaches Program (ECP) Symposium at Galway Downs focused on correct cross-country position after a discussion from sports psychologist Natalie Hummel. Tips from the final day included understanding the three distinct positions for cross-country riding – galloping, preparatory, and jumping positions. Riders were advised to shift their weight back and open their hip angle when preparing for a jump, and to maintain contact with the horse in the jumping position.
Makenzie Davison demonstrated how to teach a young horse to confidently jump a bank, ditch, and go through water, emphasizing the importance of controlling speed and rhythm. When introducing a ditch, riders were advised to set the horse up for success and be connected to the horse when presenting it to the ditch. Riders were also reminded not to lean back and anticipate problems when riding a drop, but to stay close to the saddle with a slightly closed hip angle.
During cross-country schooling, participants were encouraged to put horses in a position where they are obliged to obey and the question is obvious to them. If a horse overjumps a fence, it is wise to go back and jump a smaller fence first before attempting the larger fence again. The USEA Eventing Coaches Program aims to educate all levels of eventing coaches with crucial training principles to ensure safe and educated participation in the sport of eventing.
