11 Outdated and Obscure Laws Still on the Books in South Carolina

South Carolina still has several old and obscure laws that are still on the books and may need to be updated, removed, or reworded. Some of these laws include not being able to fish with dynamite, not being able to play pinball if you’re under 18, and not being able to work on Sundays, with some exceptions for certain businesses.

Other strange laws in South Carolina include not being able to be insincere in a marriage proposal, holding railroad companies liable for scaring horses with trains, not being able to keep an alligator as a pet, and not being able to dance or purchase silverware on Sundays. Additionally, a law requiring every adult male to bring a rifle to church on Sundays to ward off Indian attacks still exists.

Fortune tellers must be licensed in South Carolina, and it is illegal to give a tattoo to anyone under 18, even with parental permission. There is also an urban legend that it is legal to hit your wife on the courthouse steps on Sundays, but there is no official record of this law existing.
