10-Year-Old 4-H Club Member Wins District Competition with Bushcraft Candle Presentation

Ollie Schoch, a 10-year-old 4-H club member, won the Bonnyville District Communications junior presentation division with her presentation on making Bushcraft Candles. She explained the process of making the candles, including collecting materials like spruce pitch and pine resin. Schoch credited her parents for helping her with the presentation and getting information about bushcraft online.

Schoch received tips from judges to slow down her speech and remain calm for her upcoming presentation at regionals. She expressed her passion for bushcraft and desire to continue learning survival skills and collecting herbs. Despite feeling calm about the competition, she is not looking forward to the long drive to get there.

In addition to her interest in bushcraft, Schoch also has a love for horses and plans to focus her next presentation on something related to horses. She enjoys spending time with her pony Storm and her horse Garth Brooks, whom she affectionately calls her “big friendly giant.” She is looking forward to seeing friends at the upcoming regional competition in Holden.
